Resident Advisors
The 2023 UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Academy will begin on June 20, 2023 and end on August, 4 2023. We are looking to hire up to four resident advisors (RAs) to oversee Hillman Academy scholars in a University of Pittsburgh residence hall and provide supervision of scholars’ activities during the seven-week program. While Hillman Academy high school scholars attend programs during the weekday, their RAs can participate in a lab research project of their own that culminates in a final presentation at the end of the program.
Job Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 years old by the start of the program and must have completed at least one year of post-secondary education. Applicants must be available to live in the residence halls with the scholars full-time for the duration of the seven-week program. There is no registration fee to apply. A passion for science and education of our scholars will be a major criterion for acceptance.
The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of participation and as a condition of continued participation: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance. Clearance information can be found here.
Job Description
Resident advisors will supervise scholars in the residence halls; assist with the coordination of meals, travel, and activities; accompany scholars to and from events; help scholars create their poster presentations for the closing ceremony; contribute feedback for scholars’ overall professional development. RAs doing research will also be responsible for any obligations related to their projects and may be expected to present in a separate poster session. We expect RAs to be able to attend all necessary events and to be able to adapt to changes and situations that arise. Also, many of our scholars living in the residence halls will be from outside Pittsburgh, and we expect RAs to do their best to ensure that the students are comfortable and enjoy their summer experience. We allow some time off as long as it is worked out with the other RAs, but extended breaks may be subject to a reduced stipend.
The stipend for RAs is $500.00 a week to be paid in one or two lump sums. We expect applicants to commit to the entire seven weeks. Resident advisors will stay in the residence halls for free; however, meals and certain transportation costs will be their responsibility. Situations may arise where you will need to make a purchase for the program or a student.
Here is a link to the Residence Quick Reference. It briefly details the information and rules needed for scholars living in the residence hall.
Signing Resident Advisor – We are also looking for resident advisors who can communicate in American Sign Language (ASL). Our program has recently expanded to include deaf and hard of hearing students. As such we are looking for RAs who are able and willing to supervise and help facilitate communication with those students. This job is NOT an interpreter position and your responsibilities will be that of an RA.
